Providing Safe Transitional Housing
Auntie’s Home began providing services in 2022, in response to the national housing crisis faced by transgender, gender diverse, non-binary, gender expansive, two-spirit, and all those, especially trans woman of color, that are not limited to traditional gender definitions. According to 2018 HUD statistics, transgender people account for .5% or 2,512, of the total number of homeless people. Although these rates continue to increase year by year, we know that they are significantly higher than reported due to federal reporting guidelines. Due to concerns such as high unemployment, housing discrimination and safety, the transition journey has many traumatic experiences that severely impact trans people.
We believe that by providing safe transitional housing, trans people will have a foundation to build their world on. This will be done by providing access to appropriate education, improved skill-sets as well as networking and resources.
